Intake and exhaust valves are responsible for controlling the flow of gases through the combustion chamber. Intake valves let air in, whereas exhaust valves let air out.

What happens when an exhaust valve fails?
Exhaust valve combustion occurs when the exhaust valve does not seat properly, preventing heat from being transferred to the cylinder effectively. Superheated gases scorch these valves starting at the thin edges. This damage can erode and weaken the valve, exacerbating seat wear.
