The camshaft activates a cylinder's intake and exhaust valves. One lobe will activate the intake valve, followed by a second lobe that activates the exhaust valve. As the shaft rotates, the valves will open and close in the appropriate timing.

How do I know if my camshafts are worn out?
Signs of a damaged camshaft:
Temper and burst. Cylinder misfires at low and very high rpm. The valve makes a loud knocking sound

Causes of camshaft problems:
Failures are usually due to one (or more) of the following: insufficient lubrication, improper break-in, re-use of old/worn parts, mechanical interference, and poor quality/not torqued hardware to specification. Always use the camshaft molybdenum paste that comes with the flat lifter camshaft kit.

What else should be replaced when replacing the camshaft?
When you replace a camshaft, you usually also replace the camshaft timing components such as the tensioner, timing chain or belt, and sprockets. If your engine has a water pump driven by a timing chain, replacement is also recommended.
